Hyaluronic acid is a natural polysaccharide with incredible properties. Hyaluronic works like a sponge for water molecules (retains up to 1000 times its weight). Why hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights in the same solution? This question was answered by the 2016 study entitled: “Penetration of hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights into human skin, probed by Raman spectroscopy”.
The results of the study are quite clear and illuminating: anything up to 300 kDa offers a degree of food penetration, with 50-300 kDa being ideal for anti-aging and lower molecular weights (80-10 kDa) can penetrate deeper, being ideal for cellulite and water retention. On the other hand, anything above 1000 kDa remains on the surface of the epidermis, with the body’s 2000 kDa native hyaluronan being unable to fully penetrate the epidermis.
